Western Canadian Ice Racing Association of British Columbia
The Western Canadian Ice Racing Association of B.C. (WCIRABC) has been operating for almost 40 years.  Under the name "Cars On Ice", this club organizes automobile ice races on frozen lakes in central British Columbia.  The most popular lake is Barnes Lake near Ashcroft and Cache Creek. Ice racing members come from all over the province and some from Washington State.

The Ice Racing season starts shortly after the new year and runs for about two months assuming the lakes stay frozen.  The Cars on Ice club requires at least 10 inches of ice before they will allow cars on the lake, although more is prefered.

Ice racing cars can be anything from 40 year old Austin Minis and Datsun 510s to modern Hondas, Nissans and Subarus.  The tires these cars use to get traction on this slippery ice can be studded or not depending on the class being raced.  The race cars in the really slippery class, Rubber to Ice, use off the shelf winter tires such as Bridgestone Blizzak, Nokian Hakkapeliitta, or Michelin Aplin. The studded class use tires with 38 studs per foot, or 30 sheet metal screws or a special purpose Menard tire.  The ice racers generally race for fun though the competition is intense.

The club was born four decades ago when a few ralliests and solo people from the Vancouver area thought it would be fun to get in a bit more winter driving.

The father of one of these owned a motel in Cache Creek
and as it is cold enough there in the winter and as there is a lake nearby, a solo event was arranged. And....... it was just way too much fun.

It all grew from there. The racing grew to a fully sanctioned series under CACC and has continued for almost 40 years. Years past have seen fields of 80 but 25 to 30 cars is the norm. A season usually consists of four weekends, with racing both days and on the third weekend a two hour enduro is held.

The club is very family oriented with many sons and daughters involved as workers, crew members and as the new generation of racers.
